Born in Atlanta and raised in a river town in Illinois, Amanda Maclin’s relationship with photography began at the age of six with her first film camera. Before digital photography became the norm, she was immersed in the tactile and technical foundations of the medium through hands-on work in her father’s basement darkroom. That early exposure instilled a lasting respect for process, patience, and precision. These values continue to shape her visual approach.

Surrounded by photographers and artists within her family and local community, Amanda developed a strong visual sensibility early on. She later pursued a broad, interdisciplinary arts education with focused study in photography, graphic design, and printmaking, working extensively with film, traditional darkroom techniques, and printmaking processes. Her education continued through photography coursework across seven distinct college campuses, reflecting a sustained commitment to learning driven by practice.

Following her formal studies, Amanda spent several years developing color film and prints in a professional photo lab before establishing her own black-and-white darkroom. These experiences deepened her technical fluency and reinforced a process-oriented approach that remains central to her work.
The discipline of film photography continues to inform Amanda’s practice. While she embraces contemporary digital tools and evolving technologies, her work is grounded in the intention, restraint, and observational clarity cultivated through traditional photographic methods. This foundation shapes her compositional choices, tonal sensitivity, and attention to detail across all bodies of work.

Since relocating to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina in 2017, Amanda has maintained a professional photography practice that balances commissioned work with ongoing personal exploration. She has also shared her knowledge through privately guided tours and workshops, offering focused instruction in landscape photography to photographers at varying stages of their practice.

Amanda approaches her work with quiet attentiveness, technical rigor, and respect for subject and place. Her photography reflects a sustained curiosity and commitment to craft, resulting in images that feel considered, enduring, and deeply rooted in process.
